back then i think it was full time training for at least a year to eighteen months for fliers.. One of the reasons he got into air guard was many men who wanted to fly didn't want to take a full year and half away from their jobs , schooling etc.

bush did more than his fair share in national guard. It was also mentioned he volunteered to go to viet. twice but was turned down for lack of flying experience.

GW never flew again after early 1972 when he was finally cleared to do solo flying in a real jet. Something happened to him. Probably a drug arrest which the Guard knew about. It would explain everything. Or he just chickened out. Makes total sense.
