The electoral college prevents regional dominance, and prevents domination by large capitol cities. See London and Paris for examples of cities which dominate and get all the resources.

Regional dominance can lead to regional conflict. The US has already done that, 1860-1865, and has the T-shirt. Of course, civil war in a major nuclear power might have vast eneterainment value for the rest of the world.

The US is a republic, not a democracy. Being in California, I have a 30 page voter pamphlet on about 20+ propositions which provides a fine example of why direct democracy can be sub-optimal.

I expect the electoral college will last past my lifetime. Most serious political people understand why it's there. Any high school student who hasn't been sniffing lots of glue can understand it.

One counterpoint to a republican form- what would have happened if the Germans and Austrians had a chance to vote on the Euro...
