Yeah, batteries are quite expensive. The folks who I know are so far off the grid that it is cheaper to go solar than to tie into the closest lines. Other than that, they have to use generators.
In my case, I generally use so little power, when I am thinking "conserve", that my ROI , off the grid, might well be the rest of my life. Plugged into the grid, esp. with a hydro-generator, would have paid off a lot faster.Calif. did have grants which would have funded about half the solar cost. It also funded wind and two other technologies, but not small-scale hydro. If I could have had them pick up half the cost of the inverter, it would have been fairly cheap to plug the hydro plant into it.

Mostly, it would make me feel good. The money right now, would be incidental. After retirement, tho, it could be a nice source of income.
But, to the best of my knowledge, the house the building guy would find is not the house it shows on his plans. So, up 'til now, I've passed.
