Our library has some of the Foxfire books and I've borrowed them in the past (quite some time ago). They're interesting -- some volumes are better than others as far as information is concerned. These days, there's quite a bit of good info online -- especially if you find a newsgroup devoted to some particular interest. Reminds me that, a few years ago, a newsgroup contacted me asking if I would be willing to join and post info on stackwall construction as they had seen photos of my buildings online and wondered if I'd be willing to be a mentor to others wanting to build similar structures. It was kind of fun for awhile -- I probably answered questions for a year or so. The only thing was, after awhile I started to realize that most of the people in the group would probably never really get a chance to put up a house or barn. There was something of that "Of Mice and Men" quality to the whole thing. I could almost hear George reciting to Lennie, "we'll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we'll just say the hell with goin' to work, and we'll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an' listen to the rain comin' down on the roof..." It made me a little depressed after awhile, so I eventually dropped out. I do hope that at least a couple of people on the list actually made it back to the land and fulfilled their dreams of building a stackwall house.
