Retrained for many means getting another job at 60% of the pay and a weak or no union to protect you.

The oil, gas, steel and coal industries are booming and will continue to do so. Not as soft as working in the auto industry, but the pay is good the future is bright.

The problem is that many people undereducated and/or not to swift people were able to get above market salaries in unions. Globalization is forcing competition upon us and many are not prepared. If you got a poor education in through HS, you are in your 30-40's, have not read a book since HS and watch MSM for news you are not prepared to thrive in this environment.

The only hope is that the USD keeps sliding slowly and US manufacturing regains some more ground.

My sister and her husband got laid off in Ohio last year, just outside Columbus.

He enrolled in college night school and recently started a new job with a 40% pay raise. The company told him to stay in school and they will pick up the expense.

My sister is back getting the same as before.

They are both late 40s and both are Democrats voting for GWB.
