That wasn't where I thought you were going. It would be nice to ween ourselves off the oil, and we will one day. Doing it artificially by jacking up taxes isn't the way and would nuke our economy in the mean time. First, it doesn't have to nuke our economy.....if its done gradually and well thought out. Secondly, when do you plan to start the weening process...........when there is no more oil? Seriously, Brian, we are running short of the resource. During the past ten years, few if any new reserves have been found in the world. And now we are finding that the amount of the reserves some countries claim they have are overstated. Only SA, Nigeria, Iraq and Russia have any real reserve capacity left and are able to increase production. And SA will be reaching the end of that road soon. For the past two years, I have been investing in NG stocks and the statistics are scary. In the early 90s, NG was fairly plentiful in the US.........they could drill down 1000 feet and hit NG. By the late 90s, drilling had increased to 5k feet. And now in 2004, they are having to sink wells as deep as 15k. As for crude, the quantity of 'sweet crude'.......the kind our refineries are built to handle.........has diminished greatly over the past ten years. Things are growing tight. I think the days of crude under $30 are long gone. So, again, I ask you when to do you plan to wean us off oil? We laugh when we hear that the Europeans put a huge tax on gas to discourage usage, and call them bad socialists. As I said before, you seem to want to live in europe... Sorry but that its about the stupidest retort that the right can make. Its pathetic. I will forget you said it. We fight tooth and nail against every mass transit or interurban rail proposal. Some of them are just plain stupid. We have a big country, they have small ones. Rail just doesn't work for areas that aren't dense. There is a rail plan going forward in Raleigh. I thought it may be a good idea until the knuckleheads left the airport off of the system, and the transit authority has it's own reports that say nobody will ride it and it won't help traffic. Yet they still want to build it. Go figure. They always leave the airports off at first.............thanks to the taxi lobby. If Raleigh is like other cities, it will be added after the line opens. There's is nothing better than taking the train to the airport......it makes life much easier. As for there will be no one to ride it, you will be surprised. Raleigh is small so the ridership won't be huge but if its anything like San Diego, Portland and LA, the ridership will grow quickly. Light rail is clean, pleasant and faster than buses. ted
