Malcolm, I have no idea whether mainland Chinese are allowed to go to Taiwan [by either their bosses, or the Taiwanese].

On capital flows, there are large flows between Japan and the USA, and UK and USA, and NZ and Japan, and NZ and Oz, but none of those suggest that one or the other of those are about to be taken over by the other.

The old idea of bigger is better seems to have gone by the boards in many respects. Corporations "stick to the knitting" and such cliches instead of going the conglomerate way of vertical integration and lateral accumulation. Similarly, empires seem to have had their day and community of interest is more important than being part of an empire.

Google would know about Chinese visiting Taiwan.

I really can't see the point in China starting a war with Taiwan, even if Taiwan declares full independence [which presumably would change something or other - such as perhaps UN membership]. If Quebec went independent, literally splitting Canada in three like India dividing into East and West Pakistan and India, with subsequent independence for Bangladesh, I can't imagine Canada having wars over it. Nor can I see why China would want to have a war over a much less important issue than Quebec is to Canada.

But megalomaniacs know no bounds and they might well decide to nuke the whole place to show them who is boss.

"I wonder, are mainland Chinese allowed to take tours to Taiwan? That would be interesting to know."

Yes. I am sure if YiWu would like to visit Taiwan with her China visa. She will be able to visit though she needs to have a reason/purpose at this time (Just like any other country immigration rules). There are more Chinese illegally staying in Taiwan than those who visit with China visas.

There have been a couple of cases that China tourists set their foot loose as soon as they landed on Taiwan soil.

Chinese (born in China) with other country visas ie. Canada will be easily tour Taiwan without a sweat.
