My take is that lots of folks, especially the Great Unwashed and the Hoi-Polloi, don't like to do any thinking for themselves. So, they simply follow and support the party that creates the greatest impact on their fears and emotions. As for the others, they don't like to upset the applecarts and gravy-trains they have been enjoying under the Bush Administration. Also the Fundamentalist Christians or the Christian Right seem to agree with Bush that he knows for certain what God wants him to do.

BTW, an unconfirmed report had it that some time in the late 1990s Cheney told Bush that

finding an excuse to invade a small country like Iraq and defeating it could bring in considerable socio-politico-economic benefits for the conqueror. By way of supporting his argument, Cheney reportedly cited the fact that both Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan gained much prestige and political influence, Margaret for her invasion of the Falkland Islands and Reagan for his bombing of Gadaffi's palace in Libya.

It is now easy to see why Bush became obsessed with invading Iraq, a reckless venture sidetracked temporarily by having to deal with Osama and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
