It's silly to make those generalizations about savers. Suppose I'm a saver and my neighbor is a borrower. If I keep my mortgage and loan my savings to my neighbor to buy his house, I lose my house and my savings in a depression.

But if I use my savings to pay off my mortgage and bury a few gold coins, I can plant a garden in the back yard and thus survive a depression. Savings are not equivalent to lending.
