You seem to have forgotten that Audie Murphy
and Sergeant York apparently had no interest in politics and very likely lacked political skills.

If I am not mistaken, Sergeant York was urged to run for some political office in his hometown but he declined. Finally he was appointed to some political position but in it he merely functioned as a figurehead.
