Tough to imagine that contraception has never been accepted by the Catholic Church. I would strongly disagree with your assertion that most Catholics believe contraception is a sin along the same lines as abortion. I have never heard any of my friends ever make a negative statement about contraception. Never even in theory. Wait, there was that fabulous moment in Monte Python's "Meaning of Life" which parodied the Catholic and Protestant interpretations on contraception.
