I think under your guidelines Lincoln would have folded up his tent and went home.

as would churchill in WW2. History will judge what happens now, not the press or this thread. We cant know yet what that judgement will be but i look you attained great affection for bush in the aftermath of 9/11 and in the end though i thought there were reasons to fire this gang, I could not in good conscience turn the reins over to Kerry. From the transcript of bin ladens speech to us, one would assume that he has failed in attempt to disrupt our election and that his goal here is the same as in Spain--liberal socialist rule. He used the carrot with the american electorate to get kerry in. He is in either such weak shape or is chomping at the bit to test Kerry. For some reason he seems afraid of bush. Maybe the iraq terrorists will be beaten in Falujah and in deals struck by alawi with nationalist forces, will not be able to find safe haven in iraq. Or maybe he just sees kerry as vulnerable to attack because he cannot pull the trigger. Who knows--thats what strikes me from the transcript. mike

I am amused to see you regurgitating the "Lincoln" line, which seems to have become quite popular with the punditry and warblogosphere in the last week. I thought the endless WWII analogistics comparing W to Churchill was bad enough, but comparing W to Lincoln is out and out ridiculous. Maybe if Lincoln had used secession as an excuse to invade England the comparison would make sense.

The only Lincolnesque line that comes to mind in conjunction with George W Bush and his administration is...

...You can fool all of the people some of the time.

Lincoln would no doubt agree this fits perfectly the campaign of mass-deception leading up to the declaration of war against Iraq.
