Perhaps some day they'll have some sort of genetic fix. alcoholism definitely has a genetic component, I'm not so sure about drug addiction. I have many friend whose parents were alcoholics who avoided drinking entirely because of this only to have it come out in the next generation. I don't know which is sadder, to have a parent who is alcoholic or to see your child become one. Probably the latter.
