In modern physics, contact between two bodies is defined by convention. This is to say that two bodies are considered in contact when their center of mass is within a certain distance from one another. But because this distance is defined somewhat arbitrarily and by convention, strictly speaking I can claim that you and I are in touchy feely contact with one another. I'd be correct in the strict sense of the word of course. On the other hand, to most people the phrase would mean something very different.
