My (amateur) thoughts on AMD's advantage at the high-end desktop:

1. It doesn't matter nearly as much as it used to. The automatic upgrade cycle has been broken - the vast majority of users don't need faster computers - it's only the speed-freak gamers and the few unusual users with cpu-intensive requirements that really care.

2. 64-bit Windows will help some, but it's late and getting later. Someday it will arrive, though. At that point people will want 64-bit cpu's even though they may not actually need them.

On the mobile market:

1. Thin and light with long battery life is still key for most users. AMD still not competitive here.

On servers:

1. AMD's biggest comparative advantage over INTC. Strong margins, marketing muscle less important.

2. Itanium clearly a dead-end. But it will take a long, long time to die. That's good for AMD.

On comparative valuation:

AMD still cheap compared to INTC. I remain long AMD, short INTC. Flash still the wildcard for me though.
