The U.S. only gets 10% of its oil from the Mideast these days, so an Islamic oil embargo makes little sense because it would be against the French, Germans, and Chinese etc.

The really scary danger is that the Islamic mullahs and head-hackers corner more of the profits from selling oil, and use them to create further mischief. This is one of the reasons to develop oil alternatives, so we can blockade the Persian Gulf if the crazies take over.

FYI, as stated on multiple occasions I won't vote for Kerry or Bush.

Another difference from the 1970s is that today we have the SPR (Strategic Petroleum Reserve) to help defend us against an oil embargo. Do the French, Germans, and Chinese have an SPR?

BTW, I fully agree with Bush's decision to keep filling the SPR despite the current high oil prices. Kerry has said he would stop filling it.

OTOH, I agree with Kerry's support for better gas mileage. Not sure I like the CAFE mechanism, though. There may be getter alternatives.
