Surely you don't mean OUR Roanoke,Va? Is there a Roanoke in LA? Are there farms in Ca?
I still dream of retiring to the mountains of Va.
This week I received an email from one of my oldest childhood friends whom I hadn't heard from in about ten years. He was back home cleaning out his parents' house after his father's death and came across a stack of all our letters to each other in college and found himself filled with such a longing and nostalgia that it was almost painful and while he knew you can't go back, he had a strong, almost palpable need for that time when life was so secure and simple and good, for the people who shared it with you. He found my address on the high school site that I had written an article for (and in which I mentioned my obsessive crush on him). We made plans to meet next week on his way back home. He lost his wife four years ago after a long battle with cancer. She was only 50.

I have written a lot about my childhood in Lexington with much the same love and longing. I guess I'm not the only one who remembers it as idyllic. I even was contemplating this kind of nostalgia with a possible link to the the reelection of Bush whose moral values stand seems to have resonated with a great number of Americans-- even though I don't agree with a lot of those values- or at least federal control of them. But maybe people are confused and looking for a way back to something long gone. Haven't quite thought it through yet. And I guess I shouldn't here on DAR, but this election really had me reeling in a lot of ways.
