I heard a talking head the other day saying that this country had become too divided and too large to govern effectively....maybe the time has actually come to split it! lol. That sounds good. Maybe I could export tomatos to y'all. I don't know about it being too large. It's not so much different than some other nations, and certainly not in population. But the divisions are so stark and are by geography for the most part. One of my favorites sections in the letters between Jefferson and Madison is when they hashed out seccesion. Jefferson considered it a right, Madison didn't like the idea. But why not? If you enter into a contract, in effect, as the states did, how can not have the right to withdraw from it if you wish? The more I think about this, the more interesting it becomes. What would it take? After all, why would right-wing fundamentalist whackos living in the deep South want to keep the latte sipping Eastern elite? They don't like y'all latte sipping people with your high-brow ways. :)The entire west coast means industry, high tech, internet, media, etc. New York and Chicago has finance, media and industry as well. I'd be happy to import oranges from South America or even consume apple juice from Washington State. It would be like a divorce. The New USA (and Canada which has some nice scenery) would be the winning side which would soar economically while the Red USA would be the losing side which would fall into economic depression. I rather pains me to think what the south would sink into. We joke about being "the third-world U.S.A." but it isn't far from the truth. Another joke is that at least there is Mississippi. That way we don't come in last in all the things like education, decent housing, etc. I don't know. But if what they really want is to descend into a world defined "Revelations", I reckon maybe it's time to let them go. But I suggest we take the nukes with us.
