The last went 36 days, and after dozens of different recount formulas tried by Gore, nothing worked. Gore was banking on selective country recounts and counting dimpled and hanging chads in ONLY democratically controlled counties, but even doing that didn't work, so then they wanted to count blank ballots for Gore and Pat Buchanon's votes... and they wanted to try every unfair method of recounting, even if it took 6 months until they finally found a winning combination.
