Im not so sure about that. Clearly the Southern Strategy that Nixon launched has finally born its rotten fruit. But there is also the rise of religious fundamentalism (a periodic fever here) and the shrewd exploitation of so-called values issues. Parts of the country and whole classes of people who are being eaten alive by Bush economics voted for him based on their religious beliefs, their views of homosexuality, choice, etc. Throw Iraq and security into the mix and you have his plurality.
Personally, I think everybody needs a few days to reflect and recharge and then come back to the ground war. It really is urgent. People are dying in droves in Iraq. The economy is teetering. And the Democrats in the House and Senate need to be braced to fight what is sure to be a shock-and-awe legislative campaign.
If there is another terrorist attack here, and I wouldn't bet against it, god knows what's in store.
