U.N. congratulates Bush on victory

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 3 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Wednesday sent his congratulations to U.S. President George W. Bush on his re-election.

"The secretary-general warmly congratulates President Bush on his re-election," Fred Eckhard, a spokesman for Annan, said just hours after Democrat John Kerry telephoned his own congratulations to Bush.

Eckhard added Annan was committed to working with the United States on a host of issues and hopes to prolong their "solid, productive relationship."

"There have been a few disagreements, at least one fundamental one over the invasion of Iraq," Eckhard said. "But the secretary-general ... looks forward to another productive four years, expecting the United States to carry out a leadership role here in the organization."

The spokesman also said Annan extends his congratulations to the American people on their "impressive demonstration of democracy" as well as Senator Kerry "on his prompt and statesmanlike decision to accept the outcome" of the election.
