>>which exploration/production companies do ulike the best?<<

For a variety of reasons, too lengthy to go into here, I like Unocal for an international oil and gas producer (more gas than oil) and Chesapeake Energy for its domestic oil and gas production (again, mostly gas). The stocks are priced lower than competing companies, in terms of price-earnings ratio, price to book value, etc. A caution on Unocal: There is a trial going on, in which citizens of Myanmar claim Unocal assisted in human rights violations, including slave labor. That's one of the reasons the stock sells at a lower PE.

I increased my position in oil and gas stocks initially as a hedge against technology stocks undergoing pressure after the 2000 bubble. As oil/gas prices increase, further pressure is placed on technology, particularly in its consumer applications.
