Politics is a team sport. There is nothing wrong with voting your conscience, but you can do that regardless of affiliation. The default position is a recognition that democratic politics depends on coalitions, and one should find one's niche within a current in a party, and seek to gain leverage within the party, while helping the party to achieve its electoral goals.

Bush will have much more freedom of action, yes.
