BP--Speaking as a person who is about to reach 70 and who is now using his third upgraded cell phone, I'm not interested in the entertainment value (e.g., sports clips, music video, etc.) but would find it useful to access streaming news events, stock quotes, and other similar information available in real time.

The question in my mind is whether one can make do with a recent model cell phone, capable of accessing data at speeds at least as fast as a cable connection. You could put a PCMIA card in a laptop or smaller computer and get some of the information I think would be useful. A video transmission to a cell phone would offer far more information than could be handled in existing third generation cell phones. Again, I'm not sure this would be necessary for the type of information I want, but it would mean that the cell phone in some ways becomes more versatile than a laptop computer. And in the end, a video capability on a cell phone might be as cheap, if not cheaper than a cell phone accessing various kinds of data.

Suppose it worked like Tivo. Someone who commutes to/from work as a passenger (car/bus/train) could watch the news or a favorite program in what was previously dead time. If the phone had a flash card slot you could choose an appropriate card capacity to match your commute time.
