We are all thrilled about Tiny Thom Daschle getting kicked. More left wing Senators deserve that. But the Senate's dismal image as a club of clowns and morons is much better improved by the retirement of one of their most consistent blowhards: "Fritz" Hollings. Hard to believe this troll actually thought he could make a run at the White House once upon a time.

Two factors hurt the Senate Dems for 2006.

1) The accidental election of a few of them in 2000 as a side effect of the 1 to 2 million fabricated Gore votes.

2) Age and infirmity. They have been lulled by Thurmond's service past 100. But that is still the exception to the rule.

Senate Dems are now looking at a reality of AT LEAST another decade of being unable to gain a majority in their branch. Many will hang it up on 06 and 08. NONE will be missed.

I wouldn't look for much of a filibuster effort against Bush judicial appointments either. That's a luxury for a party within one or two gains of taking over. The cloture votes were about 55 in the current session. There's a good chance that that number has now bounced well above 60. Filibustering to stop Supreme nominations could become the non-story of the MSM in 2005...

There was an excellent article from Richard Cohen (a liberal) saying the same thing a few months ago; namely, that the hatred would cost Kerry the election.

They don't get it and will never admit the simple fact that most people like Bush.
