A UN report due to be released soon predicts a bumper opium harvest this year, close to the 1999 peak of 4,500 tonnes. Afghan opium accounts for 95% of the heroin sold in Europe, and 75% of world supply. Illegal drugs have earned Afghanistan $2.8bn this year, about half the gross domestic product and more than international aid.
