Mq-
How nice to see you. I wonder if you picked up that you have been on my mind. You wrote a post a couple of weeks ago that I can't find.
This past weekend, our older son went to a party in LA with a friend he knew from Rice who is a "futurist". CW is fascinated by artificial intelligence and its potential and believes there will be a sort of melding of AI and humans in the next century. For some reason, what he was telling us reminded me of a post I had read by you on PfP about reality and the internet...
Anyway- he had just finished reading books by Ray Kurzweil- The Age of Spiritual Machines and we couldn't get him to stop talking about it.
And I thought of you and this post-- wherever it is. Have you heard of futurism?

Congratulations on becoming a great-uncle. (I think that's what you are?) I remember Tarken (wow- he is handsome!) and am so glad he has done well. I didn't realize you have had two children at risk- nothing could be worse. I think I could handle anything but that. Ammo sliced his finger in half last year and I went nuts over that. Doesn't bode well for future crises.

We spend decades learning how things work, not knowing it all, but getting to know more of our way around the maze and understanding the operating system, only to be tossed in the recycling bin.
This bothers me SO much! The waste. I think of all that Carole was that is no more. It is perfectly understandable to me why people need myths and afterlives and belief systems. Much better than the recycle bin.
Although if you really believe in recycling-- are you Buddhist?
My dear friend has recently had a sort of spiritual rebirth and she is so HAPPY. She said to me, how could you ever have given this up?
Well, it wasn't like I did it on purpose. And sometimes I really wish I had it back. In a way, I think my little atheist son is searching for something larger with his AI and futurist theories. Something he can believe that makes sense.

What! Who left the door open?

How'd the Taniwha get in here?
