Canada is a perfect example of how it was handled peacefully, the net result was an increased level of awareness about Quebec's issues, that were previously ignored. By the way, the core issue is how the Right Wings are completely intolerant to accepting important issues to the Blue States. If the Red Wing Radicals in Congress had some level of tolerance, you would find this country united behind them. Bush's "mandate of a broad victory" and his "you either are like me or leave", doesn't generate unity. So a peaceful ballot initiative towards secession might help educate him and his team to be more tolerant and inclusive.
