As I did not agree with all of John Kerry's positions, I'm sure many who voted for Bush did not agree with all of his positions.

Poll after poll during the past year indicated the majority of respondents felt the country was "headed in the wrong direction." Many conservatives, for example, expressed grave concerns about the explosion of deficit spending during the past four years. That can't be blamed on 9/11 or the recession for much longer.

I believe Ann herself once took issue with my characterization of her as an "incorrigible conservative". She posted that, in this election, security trumped all other issues.

That being the case, no, it's not necessarily true that all who voted for Bush think he "governed pretty wisely". Many felt it imprudent to change leadership during wartime. Many, for whatever reason, disliked Kerry more than they appreciated Bush.

Bush has a unique opportunity. If he believes the election was an expression of trust and honors that trust by governing wisely and reaching out to the 56 million who voted against him he will have earned the respect of history. If, however, he continues an unwise fiscal policy and promotes a domestic agenda that caters only to the far right history will regard him less kindly. He is, after all, President of all Americans, not just a majority.
