I'm stunned at how thoughtful and stimulating you have made this thread.

Having been away a few days serving my THYMOS/ "Category III" (perceived) obligations in the elections, I have read through your many interesting posts and feel a sense of deep gratitude to each of you.

Struggling to contribute also, I could only come up with the following:

On the issue of looking to the Courts to protect our "rights" I will quote Learned Hand, my all-time favorite jurist:

"This much I think I do know - that a society so riven that the spirit of moderation is gone, no court can save; that a society where that spirit flourishes, no court need save; that in a society which evades its responsibility by thrusting upon the courts the nurture of that spirit, that spirit in the end will perish."

ON THE ISSUE OF WHAT RIGHTS REALLY NEED PROTECTING I quote Fukuzawa Yukichi writing in the 1880s in his "An Encouragement of Learning":

"Human rights are the great moral obligations that give dignity to individual human life, protect man's fortune and possessions and value his honor and reputation."
