He has made his positions known. Of course he will lean right, and the nation will accept that.

I don't think there is a specific litmus test or a specific issue that's a trigger, but I think you understand what I mean. Bush has political capital now - no one is in the mood to fight at the moment - and if he uses it wisely he will be seen as one of our better presidents. If he squanders it he risks polarizing the country even though he may achieve some initial success.

For example, if he appoints solid conservatives with long judicial experience to the courts that his right and no one will seriously oppose it. But if attempts to appoint another Clarence Thomas or some right wing lightning rod just to appease the fringe, that's a problem.
