It was striking how little demonstration of affection there was for Arafat in Ramallah. Reporters are saying that people are basically ready for him to go. Khalid Abu Toameh asked one cab driver if he was going to mourn for Arafat, and was asked in turn, was he a reporter? When he said yes, the cabbie replied, "Well since you're a reporter, I'll cry for Arafat. But otherwise, I won't cry."

A nicely positioned answer I thought. The Pals know that Arafat has failed them. They want reforms and democracy by huge margins, every poll shows it. I doubt they'll get it, but here's hoping. I sincerely hope that even if they were too great political dopes to turn against Arafat and remove him, they still might be able to avoid putting anybody else into Arafat's chair.

But Arafat has left a huge mess behind him, not a doubt about that. They will be years trying to track down the money, and the PA is full of semi-official militias that Arafat was funding on the sly.
