The US Constitution leaves to the States what laws it does not cover. It clearly denies the States the ability to establish a State religion. The marriage laws are left to the states as they are not covered by constitutional sanction or prohibition. Gays would do well to secure contractual union umbrella rather than affix the term "marriage". If it are the rights to the term that are more important than rights of a state recognized contract , the issue is merely an "in your face" that causes unnecessary polarization and works against the alleged goals. The staged illegal and questionable marriages performed in a grandstand display of disobedient challenge did nothing to forward the cause. It did however exhibit a perceived motivation of aggression. Civil disobedience, while at times is a necessarily demonstrative manner in which to draw attention to a cause, it is not the best method of attacking all problems. It often causes more harm than good.
