He tried to defer his draft, only after his deferment was rejected did he "volunteer". He appears to have researched his assignment before even "enlisting". The duty he requested was for shore patrols, not for river patrols. He reportedly was unhappy when he found out his real assignment. His fellow officers have reported that from day one, he appeared to have a personal agenda different than the agenda of his company.

How could anyone in the military do what he did to his fellow comrades?

Was John Kerry ever "in" the military? It appears he just happened to occupy the space for a few moments.
