Governments know very well that people don't think that they are paying that other half. If someone were to pass a "Truth in Taxation" law similar to the Truth in Lending laws and make it a law that people had to be informed of the full tax they'd have a tax revolt overnight.

Sorry, I'm not a multi-tasker, so I can't read, write, and talk on the phone. And I'm doing math too, which is a problem all by itself.

I've revised my thinking about ignorance the past few years. I think it can be a good thing. As for the SS my employer pays on my behalf, that is their problem. I gave them my number to work for them, and as long as that number was met, the rest fits nicely with "ignorance is bliss".
