Phil > Democrats in the US are examining their options now, and some are arguing that they should co-operate with the Republicans rather than oppose them.

What a joke -- that's what they have done all the time. They call it "bipartisanship" but that's just a smart word for the elected officials to do as they please and, in fact, create a tyranny. Indeed, the Democrats have supported W all along the line -- notably in making war in Iraq and in covering up 9-11.

> If that is the best the Democrats can come up with, it just doesn't matter.

The Democrats are not an opposition party to the Republicans -- they are an alternative party. People don't seem to understand this. In the recent election, Kerry and Edwards did everything they could to model their agenda on the Bush / Cheney manifesto -- their claim to fame was they professed they could do it better. By no stretch of the imagination could anyone consider their position to be socialist or anti-war but because they are Democrats they are tainted as "liberals".

Phil, I see this thread has now been moved to the Politics/Government section of SI.

Considering that politics is the main influence on the dollar and on the gold price, I suppose that's fair enough.
