<Pessimism is an evolutionarily-advantaged trait, I guess, as it leads to hoarding behaviors that were appropriate in a time when next year's crop might in fact fail.>

ACF, Have all the rainy days gone? The story of the Three Little Pigs an anachronism?

I'm reminded of my uncle, a pilot, telling me about the latest and greatest 500 passenger airliner which was pilotless and fully automatic.

As usual, when the aircraft had taken off and reached cruising altitude and speed, the automated "pilot" made an announcement.

"Welcome to the maiden flight of this amazing new aircraft. You are cruising just below the speed of sound at an altitude of 15 kilometres. This aircraft, which is fully automated, computerized, fool-proof and failure-proof, using all the latest design technologies, has been created to maximize efficiencies and benefit from the latest materials and systems analysis techniques, requiring no human input. So sit back, relax, enjoy the height of luxury and be assured that nothing can go wrong can go wrong can go wrong .... "

Are you sure the economists who have designed the world's financial systems haven't left any gremlins in the works. The umpty $trillion derivatives industry is a stabilizing force, not a top-heavy monster looming over small foundations. Nothing can go wrong?

Maybe a bit of hoarding wouldn't be all bad, just in case next year's crop of dividends and new customers does in fact fail.
