I just had lunch with a friend who was pining over the election results. One of the things she finds unfathomable is how all these stupid, etc. red folks, the little guys, could vote against their self interest by aligning themselves with the robber barons. Of course, it's a matter of how one sees one's self interest, whether tis in one's interests to line up with them or against them.

Not just that but also what you see lining up in their interest. A lot of "blue state" ideas line up rather well with the interest of big crony capitalist, and support for freer markets helps undermine crony capitalism. You posted that she said "robber Barron", not "crony capitalist", but if there is no special favors from government (or actual use of force themselves which is less likely) I don't think the term "robber barron" is reasonable. Also even if it is to apply more broadly than that extensive regulation (and probably to a much smaller extent high taxation) can help entrench big businesses.

Some people find replies to very old posts annoying. I hope you aren't one of them.
