That might well be what you could see. Fringe festivals can include all kinds of performances. Let's see... what have i seen over the years. mimes, busking, musical performances..everything from classical guitar to one-man bands with home-made instruments, stand up comedy, one-man plays, musicals, improv comedy and improv theatre, experimental theatre of all kinds, Shakespeare --- and post-modern adaptations of WS plays, puppet shows, a capella singers who do off the wall stuff.. hmmm... can't think of anything else off hand, but you probably get the idea. It's very open-ended. The main thing is, the performances usually have to conform to a time frame of a half hour, or sometimes one hour. Performances are generally on the hour to allow time for each performance and time to move to the next venue. Sets are usually very minimalist and props tend to be simple things... That performance i mentioned the other day where the actor started out clothed and ended up painting himself was typical. A wooden chair with a pink sweater over the back and a folding metal chair with a 22-rifle leaning against it. Turned out that, by part of the way into the performance, the chairs symbolized the actor's parents. Another show that I saw.. the daughter of friends, had nothing but a spotlit circle on stage with the shadow of "slats" across it. It was supposed to represent the manger inside of the barn at the farm where she grew up. Wonderful play. And I've told you about another where a young woman did the whole performance dressed in a flesh-toned bodysuit with about 20 feet of vacuum-cleaner tube attached to her abdomen..the umbilical cord to her mother.. and she just wore dresses over it through the whole performance of acting, singing, dancing. It was terrific. If you get the chance, do try to go to a festival sometime. It's nicest if you can go to some nice town where the performances are in a mix of indoor and outdoor venues and you can wander from one to the next. croc
