How many secessions can you cite that were peaceful? I can think of only two: the break up of the USSR and Czechoslovakia. You want to go, you'd best be prepared to hold those red states. And, BTW, 90% of the rest of CA. It voted for Bush.

The state's divide runs down its spine: The more heavily populated coastal communities embraced Democrat John F. Kerry with fervor, while inland areas went heavily for President Bush, a split repeated in the Senate race and on ballot measures, in many cases.
