Adlai Stevenson comes to mind. He lost to Eisenhower twice in the 1950's, the second time by more than the first.

EDIT: William Jennings Bryan, 1896, 1900 and 1908.

<<Have the Democrats ever run someone for President twice, that is, after the first run didn't pan out?

Yep and I drive by his tomb every day. Never carried his home town which was made up of shopkeepers, farmers and rail workers. Rich guy who looked down his nose on the people of his town. From what I've heard from old locals he was lucky not to be shot when he came back to town.
