" 'I find it interesting that the immediate first response of the reds is to fight; Civil War, Revolution, Nuke, whatever.'
The first response would be a declaration of a state of insurrection by the POTUS and an order for US troops to occupy key points in the state. Then you get to decide what comes next."

And the Lord God spoke unto the hippies, and said, "Go thou forth to the city, and sit thine butts on the ground in front of thine enemy, who will smite you tooth and nail with a shroom cloud. But fear not, for the rest of my nations will smite thine oppressor with mine own shrooms, whilest thine Red oppressor will fire in turn his shooms, until the world is consumed in the fire they desire, for to ascend on to me. But when the fire is out, they will be consigned to the eternal fires, whilest you, mine own chosen hippies, all 144 thou of you, will be wafted to Antarctica B4 immolation, and live happily ever after, as mine chosen bearers of the truth. Live there, and claim those resource I placed there for you, under the ice, back when the world was young. Yea, verily, pax vobiscum, my hippies."

"'Also, as in most divorce settlements, something has to be done with the communal property. I'd settle for everything in place, with the exception of half the gold in Ft. Knox.'
You'd best rethink that. That was the POV the South took at the outbreak of the Civil War. They said that fort in Charleston Harbor was theirs because it was on South Carolinian territory. The feds said it was federal property and, no, they had no intention of abandoning any federal property anywhere. The South Carolinians opened fire on Fort Sumter. The war was on. Hundreds of thousands of dead and millions of casualties later, the feds had possession of it all. And, like it or not, the rebels did what the federals wanted."

I forgot to mention the downside. Our names are both on the mortgage. In this case, the house can't be sold, for lots of reasons, including a buyer who could come up with the money (if we wait 'til 2050, maybe China will, but let's not go there). So we are still liable for half the Debt. Oy. Being most honorable, we will pay off our half. ASAP. Hate interest payments.
