I haven't read White Noise. I've tried DeLillo, but couldn't get interested enough to finish. It's a very postmodern sort of project. People I respect very much think DeLillo is a very fine writer, though. I think he's a fine and talented and serious writer, too -- but, for some reason, he's just not one whose work interests me. Your daughter is clearly really interested in literature, and not simply shlock, and my guess is that she's a very intelligent girl if she's appreciating DeLillo. But I also guess that if you haven't read a book in 30 years, you'll find it hard going. Maybe you should ask her to recommend something simpler, more related to some interest of yours, something with a strong narrative drive, to reintroduce you to the process of appreciating fiction. Would that hurt her feelings?

If it would, just go for it. You can read 30 minutes a night.

It seems possible to me that what she wants is to discuss the ideas contained in the book with you. He writes idea-rich books. That maybe it's more about communicating with you than about literature....

Go ahead and read the book, KR, and talk to her about it! That's what I think. Since you asked.

How do you get information, or new ideas, if you don't read?

This is a real question, not a criticism. I'm just curious. I didn't read books, except for some poetry, for 20 years after my daughter was born--my attention span was totally shot by hormones, then rearing her, my increased workload, etc. I did read a huge variety of newspapers and magazines, though, so I didn't miss a lot except the incredible richness of words when someone who loves them and is good at it is writing them. Now I love being lost in the world of a book again.
