Now see, Sidney, I know you mean well in this post, but this kind of statement is what I think gets liberals in trouble sometimes by polarizing things needlessly. To people who do not believe in abortion, this is SO inflammatory. When does a zygote become a baby? There is absolutely nothing that happens betweeon conception and birth except growth, so logically, regardless of how many cells the little being has, it must be a baby. Personally, I think there is an argument to be made for abortion in the first trimester, because if a woman does not want a baby it is more likely to be neglected and abused, and that is hideous psychic pain that a child never really fully recovers from. I also think a fetus that is going to be aborted should have anaesthesia. And I wish the religious right cared more about what happened to babies AFTER they are born. Civilized European societies make sure their young are well-fed, that women have long, paid maternity leaves, and that there is a safety net and a much more egalitarian society. They realize that healthy families and good education are REALLY important, not just good campaign slogans. I think John Kerry lost a lot of votes for his unconvincing and strange position on partial birth abortion. You do not have to be a conservative Christian to find this procedure revolting, or to support its ban.
