"we want to let the free market handle [environment] it and do something more realistic like go nuclear."
Free market runs on Quarter over quarter earnings per share growth. I can see free market win out with space exploration etc. But how would you justify an investment in growing a tree, that takes years to grow and minutes to bring it down ?

"You want gay marriage, most of us are fine with civil unions. They can do what they want in their bedroom, just don't screw with something as fundamental as marriage."

Are you just defending the word "marriage" here ? If we pick another word called "xyz" and give exactly same priviledges like tax break, insurance coverage to "xyz" as "marriage", is that alright with you ? What specifically are the gays/lesbians destroying, that is not already broken in a marriage with 50% divorce rate ? Are you doing it because the Pope/Bible says so. Is there any logical reason to not grant them the rights ?

"You guys hate a war where we have national security interests, but are ok with a war where we don't have national security interests (Bosnia, Kosovo etc). Ok, so we may be pretty far apart on this point.

We do disagree here. Personally I hate wars, all wars. There is difference in understanding of what we are saying. Just because we say we dont support war in iraq (or afghanistan) does not mean we endorse what bin laden does. We dislike both. We dislike deaths of innocent people anywhere. And it is possible to do that. In fact, we believe it is necessary to carry that belief for world peace, even though there may be cases when you have to fight and civilians may get killed.

"How do these things compromise the woman's right to choose? Choice is fine, but you guys take it to a point where it's casual disregard for human life."

I agree this is controvesial. BTW, there is a big difference between "supporting partial-birth abortion" and "choice of partial-birth abortion". Endangering womens health is one extreme and casual disregard in another. There may be some middle ground here, like you suggested.

Bum.

You want gay marriage, most of us are fine with civil unions.

What's the difference, other than the wording?

You guys are pro choice to a fault (I don't see how anybody can support partial-birth abortion...absolutely sick), many of us want limits on it, but not outright banning. You can't get rid of it entirely IMO as it would just move back into the back alleys. What's wrong with parental notice though? Putting a limit on an abortion within the first trimester?

The above all makes sense to me (your suggestions), and I have the same ideas about gun control - why not put a 3 month waiting period to buy a handgun, and mandatory annual classes on anyone that wants to own a handgun?

Things are a no-brainer for me (like rights gay/marriage, pro-choice, environment, etc) are a ticking time-bomb for them. Similarily, things that get me going (Iraq war and unnecessary deaths) are no big deal.
...

I'd have to say, its pretty hard. There dont seem to be a whole lot of common ground to agree upon at this point.

There's more common ground than you realize. You like the environment, we like the environment...we just want to go about things differently. You guys want to jack up the taxes on oil, sign kyoto and build windmills (just not near the Hamptons!), we want to let the free market handle it and do something more realistic like go nuclear.

And drill in Alaska, the Pacific......and wherever you think there might be oil....the environment be damned. As for conservation.......screw conservation, its not the American way.

You want gay marriage, most of us are fine with civil unions. They can do what they want in their bedroom, just don't screw with something as fundamental as marriage.

First of all, marriage in the US is a relatively new phenomenon. Before the 20th century, marriage was much more rare......so much so that laws were passed to encourage marriage.

Secondly, I understand that the civil unions do not carry the same benefits as marriages....things like inheritance and health insurance benefits.

Thirdly, why should a right that most people have be denied to a minority. It would be unacceptable to any minority. For precedent......look no further than women's suffrage. Women fought and fought for decades until they got the right to vote.

You guys hate a war where we have national security interests, but are ok with a war where we don't have national security interests (Bosnia, Kosovo etc). Ok, so we may be pretty far apart on this point.

There are so many differences.......a book could be written. This war in Iraq was the breaking point. So many lives and money have been lost.....FOR WHAT?!! Its unconscionable. And to think you guys think Bush is doing the right thing. It goes beyond the realm of reasonableness.

You guys are pro choice to a fault (I don't see how anybody can support partial-birth abortion...absolutely sick), many of us want limits on it, but not outright banning.

I don't believe that. I think you are kidding yourself if you think most of your cohorts think like you do on this subject. From the exchange of posts we have had, I consider you more moderate. You are like my Republican friends here. I think people like you tend to be rare.

Those are some of the things we disagree on but the differences run much deeper. Nowadays, I can tell someone who is Republican by the way they act.......its like their basic personalities are different from liberals.

I think the differences have always been there......but in the past there was a live and let live attitude between the two groups. Suddenly, that's all changed........now the right wants us to live like they do.

And you know what.......not in this lifetime.
