Maariv International is not too reliable a source. Arafat has marked Kadoumi as his successor Senior Palestinian officials claim. Say copies of will given to Suha, Palestinian UN envoy al-Kidwa. PLO politburo chief Kadoumi known to possess radical views Amit Cohen Yasser Arafat has issued a political last will in which he appoints head of the PLO politburo Farouk Kadoumi as his successor, senior Palestinian officials claim. According to estimates, Kadoumi will accept the position of PLO chairman but will not serve as leader of the Palestinian Authority in light of his objection to the Oslo Accords. The Palestinian officials said that the “Rais” handed over copies of his last will to his wife Suha and his cousin and Palestinian UN ambassador, Nasser al-Kidwa. Another senior official in Arafat’s milieu strengthened the claims, saying that in his last moments of clarity, Arafat asked to summon Kadoumi to his bed in order to tell him something important. Palestinian sources estimated that if indeed Kadoumi has been marked as the next Palestinian leader, it would terminate the career of Abu Mazen and turn Abu Ala into the strongest figure in the PA. Although Kadoumi, who is based in Tunis, is considered a popular figure, he has no real hold on the Palestinian street and would therefore need Abu Ala by his side. The officials added that if Kadoumi would accept the position, he would head the PA together with Abu Ala, while former security chiefs Mohammad Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub would be their subordinates. Palestinian defense officials said that Rajoub and Dahlan have agreed to such an arrangement. The relationship between Kadoumi and Arafat has had its share of ups and downs. The signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords separated them, as Kadoumi joined the opposition. He refused to enter the territories and divided his time between Damascus and Tunisia. However, about a year ago, their relationship appeared to be back on track. Kadoumi is considered to have radical views. In addition to his opposition to Oslo, he has also expressed support of terrorist attacks in settlements as well as in Israeli cities. He also objects to any compromise in the issue of the return of the Palestinian refugees. maarivintl.com
