Reuters/Bridge has an online chart on its product which is known as a linear regression chart. For several years, this chart had a 200 day regression with two standard deviations for the upper and lower channels. Recently, they switched to a 150 day regresion chart, but I still like the 200 day one better.
I can't link to Bridge as you need an account to see it, but I did find a public page showing how a regression channel looks: vrtrader.com
Unfortunately, that chart graph is for intraday trading and so it moves around a lot. A 200 day regression is intended to look for stocks that are seriously out of bounds of normal trading ranges.
None of the screening programs I've used had a 200 day linear regression filter, so I wrote my own in Visual Basic. I've downloaded about 2000 symbols for exchange listed stocks and can run this to look for stocks over the 2 deviation upper range for short opportunities or under the 2 deviation lower range for long opportunities.
Just because a stock is outside its 2 deviation band may not suggest a perfect setup. I would suggest looking at a stock that is outside the band but also showing signs of reversal either in the chart or by stochastics.
I thought I'd share the output of last night's run in case the readers here might find anything of interest. The format for each line is symbol, followed by closing price, followed by the 2 deviation limit (which would be lower limit for long or upper limit for short). As you can see there are many more stocks above their 2 deviation range on the upper (short opportunity) than on the long side. Given the breakthrough on the Nasdaq of the 2000 level, I'd be more careful of the short side than the long side for setups. A lot of fund managers have their bonus riding on how the market finishes up in December and that should be supportive of the market. The smaller list of long opportunities might offer some potentials.
