Two letters, one from an 'American' other a 'Pakistani,'...a glring example of tyranny of minority...

Wanted — a better nationality

Sir: It is embarrassing to be an American. It is even worse when people speak about “the American people” voting for Bush. Please! Nearly half the American voters voted for Kerry. So, don’t lump us all together. About half of us are devastated by this election and can’t find a single rational reason why anyone would vote for George Bush.

Moral values

Sir: Apropos Miranda Husain’s excellent article, “The winner is Michael Moore”, (Daily Times, November 4).

American voters were heavily influenced by moral values instead of the issues pertaining to foreign or domestic policies. Analysts constantly talk about a polarisation of politics in the USA. What they don’t realise, however, is the fact that people are polarised themselves in that country.

Look at what happened in Ohio: John Kerry won majority in all major cities there, but he lost in rural areas. That cost him the presidency. It may be recalled that George Bush favoured abstinence to counter the spread of HIV. This was loathed not only by the Europeans but also the Americans living along the coasts.

Bush’s strategy, however, resonated with people living in rural areas. Middle America and the Bible Belt have spoken, and they now have a leader with strong conservative values — unlike Kerry who looked extremely fickle during his campaign.
