My sister just tutors geometry and low-level calculus, those are junior high school subject she teaches. No, she does not tutor anything else. I am not sure whether she is good, but sure she is experienced, since she has done it a long time. And that middle school is a good one, near the Space Technology Ministry, so a lot of students' parents are employees there. In Beijing, tutoring Math and English is in very hot demand. It estimates that 4000-5000 British alone make a living in Beijing by teaching English. If I lost my job, I will think about going back teach English. Although you are right in saying Chinese union are craps, that is true. The problem is ever since 1950, people in Chinese cities basically got life-time employment, completely free education and health care, so the union function simply takes about 1% pay as membership fee and save the money, and whoever the member has some emergency and needs the money, the union lend it out interest free. Another function of Union is to buy movie ticket and give back to members, and during the Spring festival, or national Day, or New Year, it uses the membership fee buy some goodies and distribute. That is all. Before 1980, this was ok, since union had nothing to fight. But after 1980 when blood sucking capitalists come, the thing changes. Even some of big companies which behave themselves pretty good in developed countries are doing something very bad in China, like long hours without extra pay... because they can get away with it. And the Chinese gov., although has the labor law, but no one enforce them. So the workers have to take the matter in their own hand, and plenty strikes have happened. Some of them got some good result, but most of them in vain since the gov. does not support the workers. But believe me, things are changing, although slowly. And schools as well as colleges are now among the most corrupted organizations in China. Charging students whatever they want and however they want, awful.
