Remember the pictures of Haiti when one of the hurricanes was headed their way this summer? They were particularly hard hit because the country has virtually NO trees. Because they had no other economic choice, Haiti has cut down ALL of their trees. They have prioritized survival over the environment.

They also dump raw sewage into their rivers because they can't afford sewage treatment.

The USA has a very good policy towards the environment and if you look at a ratio of economic output vs. environmental impacts, we'd do fairly well.

My contention is that the environment will continue to improve, just as it has for the past 20 years, unless something upsets the economy. If we get in bad shape economically, the people will rise up and reverse the steps towards protecting the environment.
